If you were worried you'd be left all alone this week, worry no more—U.S. Girls is here with some free advice about your dance mistakes and monthly drip. For her latest little one, U.S. Girls' Meg Remy paired with Canadian hip-hop producer and friend Onakabazien to birth their Free Advice Column EP. The EP splits its four songs 75/25, with Remy starring in three songs and Onakabazien taking the lead on the last number. Remy’s retrofitted techno-dance trio was crafted from Onakabazien’s beats that she used to help take her tension-filled lyrics and bury them deep in your brain, making accessible, catchy songs that leave you wanting more (and pretty disappointed to hear Remy only momentarily on “Disco 2012”).
Remy warbles through “Overtime” with a sound that is probably most akin to dropping a doo-wop 45 into a bathtub, but she suds it up with an open-eyed anger that haunts the harmonies. “28 Days” just made all women everywhere smile with its slap-happy, sunny-sounding take on our moon cycles accompanied by a can’t-miss, homegrown video, while “Incidental Boogie” goes way dark on the dance floor, more akin to a bad-mood Blondie than the unexpected Winehouse-goes-sonically-wild of the first two singles.
Free Advice Column is out now on Bad Actors. Catch Remy at the dates below.
